South Loop Elementary is excited to offer 2 preschool options for School Year 2020-2021:

  • Tuition Based PreK Program for 3 and 4 year olds (1 classroom, capacity 20 students)
  • Universal PreK / Chicago Early Learning Program for 4 year olds (2 classrooms, capacity 40 students)


Quick Facts about Tuition Based Preschool at South Loop

The Tuition Based Preschool program provides:

  • Operates 8:00 am -6:00 pm (10-hour day) on school days for a fixed tuition
  • Utilizes Creative Curriculum Literacy Approach in all classrooms, providing a research-based structure to support student growth and learning
  • Enrichment activities and field trips
  • Open to all students who live within the City Limits
  • Three-year-old children enrolled in the TBP Program will automatically be provided a seat the following school year in the Universal Prek 4 year- old Program at South Loop, provided the program is still being offered by CPS and there is no unpaid tuition.
  • Participation in the UPK or TBP program does not guarantee your child’s acceptance or provide lottery/waitlist preference into the South Loop Elementary kindergarten program when you live outside the school’s attendance boundary.

 

How to Apply for Tuition Based Preschool

Step 1: Visit the school’s webpage to gain a better understanding of the school and its program.

Step 2: Download and complete an application for SY20-21.

Step 3: Submit an application directly to South Loop School by email or fax.

Once a placement is offered, a non-refundable deposit of $700 must be paid using the Illinois E-Pay system which can be found here:

Families paying monthly will still use Smart Tuition once they have paid their deposit via the ePay site. In order to use the E-Pay system current parents will need your child’s CPS ID. If you are new to CPS or cannot locate your child’s CPS ID, please contact Ms. Chandler at ejchandler @cps.edy for help. 

 

This deposit is non-refundable. At the time of a placement offer, the deposit amount will be credited to the annual tuition balance.

 

Quick Facts about Chicago Early Learning Preschool (Universal Pre-K)

Chicago Early Learn vision is to provide universal access to full day pre-school, ensuring there is available quality pre-k for every four-year-old in their community and comprehensive support for parents and guardians.

  • Operation is the length of the CPS school year. 
  • Operating 8:00 am – 3:00 pm on CPS school days for free
  • Utilizes Creative Curriculum Literacy Approach in all classrooms, providing a research-based structure to support student growth and learning
  • Fee based extended day options through our Youth Guidance after school partner. This is only offered at South Loop School.
  • Participation in the UPK or TBP program does not guarantee your child’s acceptance or provide lottery/waitlist preference into the South Loop Elementary kindergarten program when you live outside the school’s attendance boundary.

 

How to Apply for Universal PreK

Step 1:   All early childhood children in the City of Chicago must apply for preschool through Chicago Early Learning or by calling the Family Hotline at 312-229-1690 and completing the online application. No students will be allowed to enroll in a CPS preschool program without completing the online universal preschool application.

Step 2: Families are notified via email by CEL which states their preliminary placement offer or waitlist status.

Step 3: Families that have been “offered” a placement must confirm the information submitted on the application by completing the document verification process (Age, Income & Residency) at their ‘offered’ school.

Step 4 (optional) For families that need a longer school day, South Loop School offers a fee based after school program through our partner, Youth Guidance. The program runs the length of the school year. Operating 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Registration and payment required. This option is only offered at South Loop School.

Class Size and Staff Qualifications:
Each classroom has between 18-20 students. Each class is staffed with early childhood certified teachers and two teacher assistants with at least 60 hours of college credit.

 

The daily schedule provides a routine designed within each classroom to provide:

  • A balance of active and quiet activities
  • Individual, small group, and large group activities
  • Outdoor play
  • A balance of child-initiated and teacher-directed activities
  • Reading time
  • Breakfast and Lunch
  • Naps and Quiet time
  • Incorporates early literacy and mathematic skills
  • Use of the Creative Curriculum and Learning Centers

 

Progress Reports:
Parent conferences are scheduled at least twice during the school year to discuss your child’s progress with the teacher.

 

Toileting Guidelines:
Based on requirements by CPS Office of Early Childhood Education, it is recommended, but not required, for children to be toilet trained prior to beginning preschool.  If a child is not toilet trained, staff is unable to change or assist with toileting if there is an accident. Parents are then asked to inform staff how they wish toileting issues to be addressed if there is an accident, with the understanding that staff cannot change diapers/Pull-Ups or provide toileting assistance.

Tuition-Based Preschool

Tuition & Deposit

Tuition for the 2020-21 school year will be $15,275, exclusive of meals. Meals may be purchased at the school or brought from home. Please submit a two-week, non-refundable deposit of $700.

Applications submitted without the deposit will not be considered. The payment must be in the form of a check or money order and should be made out to: CPS Tuition Based Program; cash will not be accepted. Your child’s name should be written in the memo section of the check. This deposit will only be returned to you if your child is not placed in a TBP program or if the proposed program does not open in this school. If you choose not to enroll your child in the program for any reason, the deposit will not be returned.

NOTE: The tuition for children entering as three-year-olds in September 2019 and returning as four-year-olds in September 2020 will remain the same.

Registration Information

All Chicago residents are welcome to apply for tuition-based preschool, regardless of neighborhood school boundaries. All students must apply. See below for documents required for registration.

Early registration is recommended so the administration can adequately plan for teacher assignments. Registration is now OPEN for 2019-2020 school year.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR REGISTRATION: 

  Tuition-Based Preschool Application and Deposit*

  Parent or guardian’s Illinois Driver’s License or State I.D.

 One of the following as proof of residency:

  • Original Lease/Mortgage
  • Two original utility bills (gas, electric, water – not cell phone) (or)
  • One original utility bill and original voter’s registration form

One of the following as a proof of child’s age: Preschool enrollees must be 3 but not yet 5 on or before September 1 of the upcoming school year. 

  • Child’s original birth certificate
  • Child’s baptismal record
  • Passport
  • Court documents

  Medical with up-to-date immunizations
Must be provided during registration or as soon as they are available to you.
