For interested students, all athletic participants must be in good academic standing and have updated physical and medical records and no disciplinary infractions.
South Loop Elementary School has competitive basketball teams for girls and boys, grouped by grades 5th-6th and grades 7th-8th. Attendance at team practices and competitions is required.
South Loop Varsity Cheerleaders learn to execute a three-minute routine to perform at one to two competitions each year. The routine consists of a cheer, dance, tumbling, and stunts. During practice, girls work on strength and flexibility while perfecting the elements of their routine. Ms. Knox is the coach and choreographer and brings her experiences from cheering in junior high, high school, and college. She also cheered for a nationally competitive all-star team. On top of teaching cheerleading skills, Ms. Knox uses her opportunity as a coach to teach discipline, accountability, and responsibility to her athletes.
Cross Country is a competitive program for boys and girls. Athletes learn about running and endurance, while competing against schools across the city. There are three or four meets along with a regional meet. Qualifiers may compete in a city championship. Each athlete must be able to provide his/her transportation to/from the meet. Attendance at team practices and competitions is required.
Track and Field is available for boys and girls. Athletes compete in various events against other schools across the city. Each athlete must be able to provide his/her transportation to/from meets. Attendance at team practices and competitions is required.
