Beta Club leads at this year’s state convention

By Naomi N., 8th grade

On Feb. 25 and 26, our school’s Beta Club went to Springfield, Ill., to compete against other Beta Cubs from across the State. We competed in academic and art categories. Our Beta club is composed of divisions. Division one is grade 5 and division two is grades 6 to 8.

The annual Beta convention is about bringing Beta clubs together on a state level to promote academic achievement, service, leadership, and character. They had plenty of team building experiences on the three-hour bus ride there, during meals and in free time. Ella Falconio a 6th grader in Beta, said, “The trip was an amazing experience especially for my first time.”

When asked how it felt to win the division one oratory competition and experience the Beta trip, 5th grader Micah Drinkwater replied, “It was my first time and I think that everyone should experience a standing ovation and be proud and go on a trip to show leadership, membership and everything.”

Mr. Murray, the Beta sponsor said, The Beta trip was remarkable this school year. My goal was to prepare the students with the tools needed for them to excel in their chosen competition category. As a mentor, I am enthralled by their efforts and success. I even had a chance to scout other categories to compete in for next school year. Overall, I would like to congratulate all competitors and look forward to your success next year.”

This year’s theme was Fueling the Future. “What fuels the future?” This question was asked in the months prior to the competition. Mr. Murray and Ms. Allababidi, the Beta club sponsors, have worked to help their members understand the theme. This has helped Beta members understand the Beta club motto, “Let us lead by serving others.”
