Big shoes to fill! Sixth-graders take over as principal and assistant principal for a day

South Loop sixth graders Ryan Williams and Zachary Smaroff showed grace under pressure on Thursday when they served as principal and assistant principal  for the day.

“They didn’t let the power go to their heads,” Mr. Rhodes, South Loop’s actual assistant principal, reported at the end of the day.

Ryan, who served as principal, and Zach, who served as assistant principal, visited classrooms throughout the day, handing out Catch of the Day certificates and Pride Paws to students exemplifying South Loop’s values of leadership, cooperation and kindness.

At one point, the duo had to decide whether to assign a student to detention, Mr. Rhodes said.

“They decided he deserves a second chance,” Mr. Rhodes said. “They were very fair about it.”

Prior to taking over for Ms. Shelton, South Loop’s principal, and Mr. Rhodes, Ryan and Zach sent a letter to the school community introducing themselves.

“My man Ryan is quite multi-talented,” the letter read. “He already has law, sports, entrepreneurship and carpentry under his belt! He’s pretty pumped to add ‘Principal’ to his resume.

“And my guy Zach loves to spend his time running, playing sports and staying active.”

Congratulations on a job well done, Ryan and Zach!
