South Loop celebrates Earth Day with Clean ‘n’ Green

By Elena S., parent

Earth Day this year was Sunday April 22, 2018. To show our appreciation for Mother Nature, our school community joined forces with the Chicago Park District on a clean-up event at the Mary Richardson Park on Saturday morning, April 21st.

Clean-up tasks included spreading mulch on the grounds near the school main entrance, removing trash from the park and keeping play areas clean and tidy for the community to enjoy.

Students of all grades from Kindergartners to eight graders including Beta Club students, school families, and neighbors showed up to lend a hand. Around 50 people came out to help on a beautiful spring morning.

The park district provided some of the tools like rakes and shovels, garbage bags and gloves, and provided shirts as give-away. Thanks to our donors there were treats for everyone to enjoy: Trader Joe’s donated water bottles, bananas, and various snacks; the Alderman office donated coffee and baked goods from Spoke & Bird. Finally, everyone enjoyed pizza and salad donated by Aurelio’s.

Alderwoman Pat Dowell stopped by for a few minutes to chat with members of the community. The South Loop Lions reusable grocery bags were available for purchase.

We hope you enjoy a cleaner park and surrounding blocks. Let’s all do our part to keep it clean and make each and every day Earth Day!
