We have learned that students have been using their school devices to watch content on YouTube, specifically YouTube Shorts. YouTube Shorts are video reels similar to what you may see on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. Currently, YouTube Shorts are not blocked from the CPS network becuase they are part of YouTube (social media platforms are blocked, but YouTube is not because it is still used for educational purposes across the district), however it has come to our attention that some of the content is not appropriate for school or for children. We are taking necessary steps to prevent access from YouTube Shorts when on the school network. Unfortunately, we cannot prevent students from accessing these videos when outside of school. Please consult with your at-home internet service provider to find out about filtering or restricting content while on your home wi-fi.
Please check your child’s chromebook history, by opening Google Chrome then clicking on “CTRL + H” in the browser. You should be able to see their browsing history on their device, as well as other devices they have been logged into. If you find anything inappropriate, please have a conversation with your child about acceptable use of their device and the which sites you approve for use.
