Principal Discretion

Principal Discretion is the process that allows Selective Enrollment High School principals to fill a designated number of seats, outside of the regular selection process, based on information provided through Application Packages submitted by students.

The Principal Discretion application period for the 2021-2022 school year opens at 9 am on May 5th and ends at 6 pm on May 19th. (Note that these are WEDNESDAYS.) Starting at 5 pm on April 30th, the Principal Discretion Handbook and FAQs will be accessible at go.cps.edu (click ‘High School’ and ‘Principal Discretion’).

The handbook provides step-by-step instructions for submitting a Principal Discretion Application Package and contains the guidelines and requirements for the process.

PLEASE NOTE:

You can accept an offer to a first round selection and still apply to Principal Discretion.  In fact I highly recommend you accept an offer because there’s no guarantee that your child will be accepted via this application.  Thus, if you decline an offer and don’t receive a principal discretion seat your child will only be able to attend their neighborhood school.

I have attached a couple of resourceful items to help you manage and understand the selection process.

This first item is a timeline of the remaining events for high school application.  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1i49Icg0REhylr7xRJexrYRn_Y4q9kw-FI5jsEv8bAN0/edit?usp=sharing

This second item is an informational one-pager that should answer questions you have about accepting/declining offers and how waitlists work. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1E37QIHOr_FDbOTyCnYtb1eF-UdQj5t0N/view?usp=sharing

PLEASE NOTE:

None of us here at the school from Ms. Shelton or the other administrators, the teachers, nor myself can access your GoCPS accounts to accept/decline offers.  Also, critically important waitlist numbers of 15 or higher to selective enrollment programs (i.e. Jones CTE program) you probably won’t get an offer. Waitlist numbers of 50 or above at any other program (i.e. Lincoln Park IB) also very unlikely they will give you an offer.

As always if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me at mlbrewer@cps.edu
