Dear Parents and Guardians,
We want to share an important update regarding our middle school art program. Unfortunately, we learned the week before school began that our art teacher would be unable to return this year due to a family emergency.
For the past two years, we have been fortunate to have a strong and engaging art program. However, when an unexpected resignation occurs so close to the start of the school year, it can be very challenging to find a qualified replacement quickly. Positions in art, physical education, music, and special education are among the most difficult to fill, as there are currently fewer educators entering these fields.
This year, over 600 schools are competing for a limited number of certified art teachers. Of the 10 applicants we have received, only 4 hold art certification, and 3 of those are already employed in other CPS schools. Two have expressed interest in future positions for the 2026–2027 school year. We have interviewed several candidates, but none have yet proven to be the right fit for our school and program.
Please know that we take hiring very seriously and are committed to finding the best possible teacher for our students. Hiring after the school year begins takes time, but we are actively searching and interviewing candidates.
In the meantime, we have a substitute teacher with an art background supporting our primary grades, and our middle school art classes are being supervised by a reliable substitute who is working closely with our staff and providing weekly updates as we continue our search.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to ensure our students continue to receive a meaningful art experience this year.
Sincerely,
Principal Shelton
