CompileHer is back with our annual design hackathon this May! The <innovate/Her> Hackathon is an 8-hour event taking place on Saturday, May 7th which is intended to help middle school girls understand the impact they can make on the world by combining creative thinking with technology. The goal of this event is simple, yet empowering: to have our attendees design an innovative mobile application that improves the world around them. All students will have the opportunity to work in teams to design a product and present their creation in front of University of Chicago professors at the end of the day. We hope that each and every one of our hackers will leave the event feeling confident in their ability to better the communities they are a part of. Registration is open to all 5th-8th grade middle school students who identify as female or gender non-binary in the Chicagoland area. No prior knowledge is required to attend this event.
Register for the event at https://bit.ly/innovateHer2022!
All attendees will receive lunch, a t-shirt, and swag items to thank you for your participation. We would also like to invite you to join our computer science workshop series at The University of Chicago campus this spring for 5th-8th grade female-identifying students! Our 5-week program will be taught once a week on Sundays from 1-3 PM in Crerar Library on campus by undergraduate students from the University of Chicago, starting on April 24th and running until May 22nd. We will be introducing our students to a number of different technologies and applications of computer science. Topics include the basics of programming through tools like Scratch and web development. Students can expect to learn something new each week and come away with a portfolio of projects. Sign up at https://bit.ly/cHworkshops!
Technology is an extremely empowering tool for young girls to be able to create change and build compelling solutions to problems they care about. We want our students to envision themselves as creators and feel excited about the possibilities technology presents them and their futures! Please feel free to share the flyer attached below with any other students who may be interested in attending the hackathon.
Best,
